Dr. Alexander Lyon is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton Hospital. Alex trained at Oxford University where he was awarded a first class degree and a clinical scholarship. Alex studied for his PhD in gene therapy for heart failure at Imperial College. His clinical interests are in the field of cardio-oncology (cardiovascular disease in cancer patients), heart failure, complex hypertension, Takotsubo syndrome and the effects of major stresses of the heart, and gene therapy for chronic heart failure.

Alex has been the clinical lead for the Cardio-Oncology service at the Royal Brompton Hospital since 2011, specialising in surveillance and cardioprotection from modern cancer drugs, risk stratification and treatment of all cardiac complications of cancer treatment. The service was recently awarded a Gold Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence award from the International Cardio-Oncology Society in 2022, and he is the Director of the new Cardio-Oncology Centre of Excellence at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Alex is a co-chair of the first ESC Cardio-Oncology Guideline which was presented and published in August 2022 which includes 272 new recommendations for the management of cardiovascular disease in cancer patients and survivors. The guideline has over 430,000 webpage views, 145,000+ downloads and 1350+ citations in the first 2 years since publication. He is also a co-author of the 2021 ESC guidelines for heart failure, 2021 BSE-BCOS guideline on echocardiography in cancer patients and the 2022 ESMO guideline on the diagnosis and management of immunotherapy-related toxicities.

Alex is a past chair of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Council of Cardio-Oncology (2022-2024), the past president of the British Cardio-Oncology Society, a board member of International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS), and he is the cardiology advisor to the charity Macmillan Cancer. Alex is a co-investigator of the first Leducq Cardio-Oncology Transatlantic Research Network funded from 2020-2025 ($6M). In 2017 Alex was co-chair of the Global Cardio-Oncology Summit which hosted 325 specialists from 33 countries at the Royal College of Physicians in London.

Alex has published over 240 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and Alex is a deputy editor of the European Heart Journal. His H-index is 69 and in 2023 he was identified as one of the top 50 most highly cited academic doctors in the UK in the last 10 years by the Web of Science.

Dr. Daniela Cardinale graduated from the University of Milan in 1987 and specialized in Cardiology (Milan 1992). She holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Physiopathology from the same University (2009). She is currently Director of the Cardioncology Unit of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, where she has been working since 1994. She has previously worked at the Operative Unit of Intensive Cardiac Care of the Centro Cardiologico Monzino (1987-1990) and at the Cardiology Division of S. Raffaele Hospital of Milan (1990-1994). Her professional experience and investigational interests focus on prevention, early detection, monitoring and treatment of cardiotoxicity; screening of cardiotoxicity in patients with cardiac disease; malignant pericardial effusion evaluation and intrapericardial treatment. He is currently the Principal Investigator for the Haematology Programme of START Madrid-FJD, a unit dedicated exclusively to Phase I trials in oncology.He is the chair of the EHA-Scientific Working Group of “”Aging and Hematology”” of the European Hematology Association (EHA). Victoria Delgado is Head of the Cardiovascular Imaging section of the Heart Institute (iCor) at the University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol with specific focus on multimodality imaging. She obtained the Medical degree at the University of Barcelona and specialized in Cardiology at Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. Since 2004 she is heading of the Human Genotyping Unit, as part of the Spanish National Genotyping Center (www.cegen.org). Her research activity at the CNIO is focused on the identification of genetic markers influencing cancer susceptibility and drug response. Gonzalez-Neira´s work is focused on breast cancer, but extends to several other cancer types such childhood cancers, lung cancer and more recently testicular cancer. She has been involved since 2006 in the Breast Cancer Consortium (BCAC) and in the last ten years she has been involved with other BCAC partners as work package leader in two European projects focused on the identification of breast cancer genes: the Collaborative Oncological Gene-environment Study (COGS) and the Breast Cancer Risk after Diagnostic Gene Sequencing (BRIDGES) project. Using genotyping and next generation sequencing technologies, these two projects, which involved the analysis of thousands of samples from different countries, have allowed identifying many relevant risk alleles and results have been published in high-impact journals.

Currently, she is executive broad Member of the Spanish Society for Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics (SEFF) and the National Representative and Board Member in the European Association for Predictive, Preventive and Personalized Medicine (EPMA).

Borja Ibáñez (Madrid, 1975) combines research activities as Scientific Director of the Spanish National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) with clinical activities as interventional cardiologist at the University Hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz.

He was trained in Spain and in USA (Mount Sinai Heart, NY). His research is at the verge of basic and clinical arena, mainly in the fields of MI, heart failure and lately to cancer therapy-induced cardiotoxicity. He is the co-PI of the large PESA project, focused on primary prevention of atherosclerosis.

He is PI of several multicenter clinical trial. He served as the Chairperson of the 2017 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) STEMI Clinical Practice Guidelines and is Chairperson of the forthcoming ESC guidelines for Acute Coronary syndromes.

He is PI coordinator of several national and international projects, including H2020-funded grants, highlighting an active ERC consolidator grant called “MATRIX” (Novel mitochondria-targeted therapies for anthracycline-induced cardiotoxicity), and a H2020-HEALTH project called “RESILIENCE”.

Teresa López-Fernández is a clinical investigator and senior consultant cardiologist at the University Hospital of La Paz in Madrid, Spain. Dr López-Fernández specialises in cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology. Dr López-Fernández coordinates the Cardio-Oncology Clinic at the University Hospital of La Paz. Dr. Wouter C. Meijers obtained his medical degree at the Maastricht University. After which he was granted a PhD position at the (Experimental) cardiology department of prof. de Boer and prof. van Veldhuisen, which he later on defended cum laude. His translational studies focused on heart failure and more specifically on cardio-oncology. He pioneered on the reciprocal relationship between cancer and heart failure. Furthermore, he co-founded the more specialized field of cardio-immuno-oncology. He obtained several national and international grands and awards which helped him to pursue his research career. He was the first Dutch cardiologist in training whom performed a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of cardio-oncology at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, USA with prof. Moslehi. He is currently fellow of both the European Society of Cardiology as the Heart Failure Association. He recently transferred within the Netherlands to Rotterdam, the Erasmus Medical Center to further train himself within (advanced) heart failure and cardio-oncology and to further expand his own research group.

Thomas Suter is board-certified in cardiology and internal medicine and the head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Lindenhofgruppe in Bern, Switzerland. In addition, he leads the Cardio-Oncology Service and is a member of the section for heart failure and cardiac transplantation at the University Hospital Bern. He received his medical degree from the University of Zurich and took residency training in internal medicine and cardiology at University Hospital Zürich, Boston University Medical Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston MA. During his cardiology training, he specialized on heart failure and cardiac transplantation. His clinical research during the past 20 years focused on the investigation of cardiovascular side effects of cancer therapeutics. He currently serves as the chair of the Council on Cardio-Oncology of the European Society of Cardiology and on several steering committees of multinational cancer trials. Furthermore, he is directing a basic research lab in which he investigates mechanisms of chemotherapeutic-associated cardiotoxicity. Peter van der Meer is a cardiologist, chair of the Department of Experimental Cardiology and director of the Coronary Care Unit at University Medical Center Groningen. He is also a Professor of Heart Failure and Translational Cardiology at the University of Groningen.
Professor van der Meer received both his MD and PhD cum laude from the University of Groningen, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. He authored >300 manuscripts, has an H-index of 77 and was member of the 2022 ESC CardioOncology guidelines. He is a member of several steering committees of large phase 3 trials. His research is funded by national and international grants including an ERC StG and CoG grant. La Dra. Macedo es profesora de medicina y cardióloga en la Facultad de Medicina y la Santa Casa de São Paulo, Brazil. Tiene un máster en Ciencias de la Salud y un doctorado en Medicina Traslacional. Es directora científica del grupo de cardio-oncología de la Sociedad Brasileña de Cardiología y miembro del Panel Clínico y Asesor Especializado (CSAP) del Global Heart Hub. También es co-chair del capítulo brasileño de la International Cardio-Oncology Society (ICOS) y actual vicepresidenta de la Sociedad Brasileña de Trombosis y Hemostasia. Es certificada en cardio-oncología por la International Cardio-Oncology Society y en 2022 coordinó la certificación del primer centro de excelencia en cardio-oncología de América Latina

Researcher, science communicator and cartoonist of scientific comics. PhD in Molecular Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He has worked in laboratories of the Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB), Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) and Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC). He is currently director of scientific projects at the CRIS Cancer Foundation, where he is responsible for the relationship with researchers, project follow-up and development of accessible content for partners, companies, families and, ultimately, the civil society that drives CRIS.
