Francisco Herrera received his M.S. degree in Maths in 1988 and Ph.D. in Math in 1991, both from the University of Granada, Spain. He is currently a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Granada.
His research areas of interest are: Knowledge extraction based on evolutionary learning, genetic fuzzy systems, data mining, data preparation, subgroup discovery, computing with words, and decision making, bibliometrics, real coding genetic algorithms and memetic algorithms.
He is the head of the research group “Soft Computing and Intelligent Information Systems" and director of the Lab Evolutionary and Fuzzy Data Mining and Intelligent Systems. He has published more than 550 papers in international journals. He has supervised more than 20 Ph.D’s on Soft Computing topics. As edited activities he has co-edited six international books published by Springer and has co-edited 20 special issues in international journals. In technology transfer, he has led projects with companies such as Caja Granada, Indra, Gamesa, Repsol, Mapfre, and Thales, applying artificial intelligence in fields such as banking, security, energy, and agrifood industries.
His academic impact is significant, with over 70,000 citations on Google Scholar and an h-index of 189 (March 2025), and over 69000 citations on Web of Science and a h-index of 120. He has been recognized as a "Highly Cited Researcher" by Clarivate Analytics in the fields of Computer Science and Engineering since 2014.
He has received numerous awards and honors, including: National Computer Science Award ARITMEL (2010), ECCAI Fellow (2009), IFSA Fellow (2013), AEPIA Award 2013, Andalusia Research Award "Maimónides" (2014), Medal of Andalusia (2017), "Granada: City of Science and Innovation" Award (2018) and "Natural de Jaén" Award (2014), International awards from IEEE and IFSA for research in fuzzy systems and optimization, Honorary Citizen of Jódar (2018).
